I'm a taxi driver, used both tomtom and garmin for 5 years, both are great, but lemme tell you something, with the tomtom i feel so much comfortable that i turn off the sound and drive just by looking on its arrows.

Tom Tom! I repeat....Tom Tom! Garmins give you the turn instructions too late and this is FRUSTRATING. Tom Tom is now offering units with lifetime map updates included. Tom Tom.

I prefer the TomTom. I recently purchased a Garmin and could not see the screen in direct sunlight. I returned it to the store and got a TomTom. It is intuitive to use and I have used it ever since.

TomTom and Garmin are top of the ranges GPS. If beauty is what you want I'd suggest you go for TomTom but when it comes to ruggedness and functionality, well Garmin is the name. Garmin range of products offer user friendly interface and ready to go out of box devices. There are many products you can choose from.

Garmins typically get higher reviews and is the current industry leader. Its probably safer to stick with them because they have the best chance of sticking around and providing updates in the future. If you choose a less stable company, they might not be around for support in the future.

I recently went on a road trip from Massachusetts to Washington DC, and for the trip we used a Tom Tom. While using it we did not once get lost, and found it to be extremely useful. Granted, I have not used a Garmin, but I would STRONGLY suggest Tom Tom from my experience with it.

I have been using GPS for about 15 years now starting with the Hertz neverlost when it came out first and then in the acura. Garmin although usable and gets the job done - it's user interface is horrible - no front display of total miles remaining is unforgivable!!

TOM TOM is better and less expensive than Garmin. TOM TOM is ready to use right out of the box and requires no computer map downloads.

I prefer Garmin. I have used garmin on trips to Florida at least twice. Its true it did take me out of the way, but I ended up home sooner than I expected. A friend of mine uses Tom Tom, and I think it gives you a lot less options.

I think currently Garmin is the more preferred at the moment. I have friends that have Tom Tom and I personally have Garmin. I have found that Garmin also has a better support telephone number in the event that you'll need general customer service or technical problems. I definitely recommend Garmin.

have had Tomtom 920 T for 6 years, still working very well, occasionally 'locks up', but use reset and it is back again, traffic reciever wire round windscreen is a pain, but don't know if more modern one incorporated in the charger will work with 920 T, any ideas ?

TomTom has a more convenient interface for entering city names. Matching cities are sorted by *distance* instead of in alphabetical order. This makes it easier to enter addresses. Also, Garmin gives me inefficient routings with unneeded ventures into city streets.
