There are a variety of reasons, however the two biggest culprits are a flooding of the motor and a very cold outside temperature. Trying again in a few minutes, and then seeing a LOT of smoke and exhaust, can certainly clue you in to the fact that you make have flooding it previously!

There are a few causes that lead to electric motors starting slowly. First and probably the most common cause is low batteries. Batteries that are drained do not charge capacitors quickly. the motors usually get the power from a capacitor and not the battery itself. Another cause for slow starts can be corrosion on the wires.

An electric motor has a slow start due to the amount of energy it takes to start up. It should not be very slow however, otherwise there is a system defect.
