The answer to this varies depending on what the independent contractor does. The clearest way to answer that would be items that are directly related to the field the contractor works in. For example, if the independent contractor does data entry services, a computer might be deduction. The only way to know for sure is to talk to an accountant.

As an independent contractor, if it applies in one's situation, they are able to write off the cost for a business line, if one had to be installed for the purpose of self-employment. Also, the cost of that business line per month through the phone service. Office space (as far as square footage) can also be written off.

Some typical tax write offs for independent contractors would be most anything travel related to the buisness activity. That would include auto depreciation air line tickets etc. In addition any work related expenses such as business cards ,ads, postage etc. Detailed record keeping is must to back up the deductions.

Clothing or uniform items if a certain attire is required, materials or supplies used in building or manufacturing an item for a contracted job, standard IRS vehicle mileage deduction -or- actual fuel, maintenance, and insurance expenses (you can not claim both and may depend on how a vehicle is registered or normally used).
