You have to remove all grass with a small rake and/or shovel. You can also put down a plastic barrier between the new plants dirt if you would like to make sure the grass doesn't come back.
I think we have to remove grass before planting.Though some plants master over the grass, many of them become helpless. Why taking risk or becoming lazy just remove the grass.
